Ronald Cummings will soon board a plane bound for the tri-state area. He isn’t leaving for vacation. He’s going to make sure the world knows his daughter is still missing, and he will stop at nothing until he finds her. Law Enforcement has said the Ronald Cummings is not a suspect in the taking of Haleigh Cummings. They have also said they are satisfied that he does not know what happened to Haleigh Cummings.

LAKE MARY, Fla. — It was a little after 11 a.m. on Wednesday when Courtney Ballinger was driving eastbound on I-4 in Lake Mary. She is a saleswoman and travels a lot along central Florida roadways. But on Wednesday, her trip would be much different when Courtney tells Action News a blue car came out of nowhere and started harassing her.
They were circling me, cutting me off, slamming on their breaks, the driver and the passenger would take turns depending on what side of the car they were on hanging from waist up out of the vehicle pointing their fingers at me, making obscene gestures, saying they were going to kill me, um, beat me up, said Courtney.
Ballinger tells Action News it was one of the scariest moments of her life.
Ive never come across anyone who is even close to being as aggressive as these individuals were, said Courtney.
Ballinger says she was scared the whole time, but what made her call 911 was when she says it looked as though Misty Cummings had a weapon.
I tried to ignore it for the first ten minutes, but when I saw the passenger, who later I found out was Misty Cummings, bend down and pick something up underneath the street. Thats when I called 911because you know, she definitely made it seem like she had something, she wanted me to feel threatened, said Courtney.
Ballinger called 911. Less than six-minutes after she dialed the number, deputies from the Seminole County Sheriffs Office and Lake Mary Police Department were on the scene. Misty and a woman later identified as Donna Brock were taken out of the car at gunpoint, cuffed, and put into two different patrol cars. Both ladies were questioned about the incident and police searched the car. No weapon was found. Officers say they could not charge the two women because it was someones word against another with no witnesses. Both women were eventually allowed to leave the scene.
What was so intense about it was how relentless they werethey were non stop, I mean, you know it went on for about 10 minutes before I actually even called 911 because I was thinking okay, these are just some young girls. Theyre angry, whatever and Im just going to ignore them, but that didnt work. They were acting as though they wanted me to think that they had a weapon in the car, said Courtney.
Ballinger says she has no intentions of filing any additional charges against Misty or the driver of the car. She says shed prefer to forget this whole event happened.
Action News spoke with the Deputy from the Lake Mary Police Department who was on scene when the women were cuffed. Officer Zach Hudson says the women were cooperative with investigators during the questioning. He says when Misty was put on the ground and cuffed, she looked up at the officer and said, Im Misty Cummings, you might know me.
Officer Hudson says there was no bravado in Mistys voice, and she wasnt acting as though she thought she needed special attention. He says it sounded as though she just wanted the officers to know she was not a threat.
Mistys lawyer Robert Fields tells Action News he believes the 911 caller made up the entire story. He says during the 911 call, the woman told dispatchers the license plate number of the vehicle they were driving. Fields says if the caller was in front of the suspects car, she would never be able to read off the license plate to dispatchers. He believes the caller initiated the call to 911 to report a false claim to get back at Misty and the driver for an earlier altercation on the road. Law Enforcement has said the Ronald Cummings is not a suspect in the taking of Haleigh Cummings. They have also said they are satisfied that he does not know what happened to Haleigh Cummings.

The search for Haleigh Cummings Action News Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Haleigh Cummings home is only a speck on the map of Palatka county. Even from a birds-eye view, it is hard to see the homes in Haleigh’s neighborhood. Finding a six year old girl has been even harder.
“Each one of those plots were searched the best they could be,” says George Pottorf, who has been searching for Haleigh since the day she went missing.
Each step behind Haleigh’s neighborhood takes you deeper and deeper into the woods. Action News found that once we hit certain spots in the woods, you could barely see a person in front of you, let alone a scrap of evidence at your feet. They are woods, a forest, that only experts can get through. Woods so deep and so thick, that even our camera had a hard time getting through some of the thickest terrain in Florida.
This is the first time the public gets to see why a search on this land is so difficult.
“You don’t want to find anything, that’s the key,” says Pottorf. “Actually, you’re hoping for a good result and obviously if you find what you are looking for, it’s not going to be a good end result.”
Pottorf has the training necessary to find the clues that could lead to a break in the Haleigh case. He owns hundreds of acres right next to Haleigh’s home and knows the land well. As a lieutenant with the Florida Fish and Wildlife, George is also an expert in the water. In the early hours of the investigation, George searched for Haleigh by boat too.
“On the very first day, we spent probably about 16 hours out here. We were hoping to find just a cold wet little girl.”
The area Haleigh was taken from is filled with razor sharp palmettos, vines and shrubs. Finding a shred of evidence is almost impossible for the untrained eye.
“That’s why we like trained searchers to be able to try to identify recent items, versus something that’s been there awhile,” explains Pottorf.
Most of the woods aren’t walkable. Searchers needed four wheelers just to get through. In these woods, even the most obvious piece of evidence can be hidden by nature.
You would think someone would pull off the road and say lets search right here, it’s going to be easy but in reality it’s hard.
“In reality its going to be tough, at least the first 50 feet is going to be,” explains Pottorf. “Trying to walk through there with the hollowed out sections, your foot would go in but your body would keep going, people were constantly tripping.”
While searchers hunted for clues they were also worried about things hunting them. The woods are filled with deadly spiders, ticks, rattle snakes, cottonmouths and pygmy rattlers.
Pottorf says potential evidence created problems in the search too.
“A lot of times searchers would find remains [...] which are obviously animals,” he said.
Satsuma woods are filled with animal bones. Each time some are spotted, George says the search has to stop.
“Obviously we’d have to stop, mark it, tag it, if we thought there was anything suspicious about it, especially in the later weeks. Obviously in the early weeks you’re not going to have that type of deterioration, but it held up the investigation several times.”
Search crews went through four thousand acres of thick North Florida country side searching for Haleigh, and there are thousands of acres left to be searched. These acres become just a spot from the sky, but people believe that spot may hold the answers to find Haleigh.

Ronald Cummings: wants PI to look into Mother’s side of family.

There is however a more plausible explanation. While this office does not have the statistical data that criminologist possess, it is safe and appropriate to state that most child abductions are perpetrated not by strangers, but by family members for purposes of illegally changing custody. Crystal Sheffield does not have custody of the parties’ two children, including her daughter Haleigh, which is a social stigma in the eyes of some.
There is often a history of conflict between the parents, with a variety of disputes involving their children. This has certainly been true with Ronald Cummings and Crystal Sheffield.
There was in fact a pending contempt hearing for back child support against Crystal Sheffield when Haleigh went missing, which is a possible motive, since she was facing jail incarceration.
This office has provided to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families confidential memos dated April 1, April 6th, and April 17, 2009, that addressed these issues in great detail and correlated this to the crime scene which showed no signs of forced entry and the fact that Haleigh would have unlocked the door for a family member. The crime scene also featured a door propped open as if staged. A stranger perpetrator would likely have left the door shut to gain time for escape. This supports the notion that someone was trying to divert attention from himself or herself.
We are not making any accusations against anyone. We are asking that Crystal Sheffield’s family be investigated in the same thorough, rigorous manner that Ronald Cummings and Misty Croslin Cummings have been investigated. In addition to Crystal’s mother and family in Baker County, Crystal’s father Johnny Marcus “Marty” Sheffield resides in Putnam County, a few miles from where Haleigh went missing.
We hope that law enforcement follows family leads wherever it might direct them, including out of state. The FBI and out of state law enforcement agencies could possibly be of great assistance.
The perpetrator of this offense no doubt never contemplated on February 10, 2009 that this case would receive such media attention.
Continuing attention may yet lead to this case being solved.

Rodriguez: “Your brother told police that when he went to the trailer that night, that you were supposedly putting Haleigh to bed — that you weren’t there. Did you go somewhere that night?”
Cummings: “No, I did not. Did not leave my house at all.”
Rodriguez: “Why did he tell police you weren’t there?”
Cummings: “Trying to get out of jail, that’s what I think.”
Rodriguez: “So your brother was in jail”
